ACADEMICAL SEAL SECOND STALEMATE

The University Arms Academical made it two consecutive draws in the Sheffield Franchise League after coming from 3-1 down to claim a 3-3 tie against the Newbold Aces.
Replete with a sizeable stage and a wealth of practice boards, the Newbold WMC was the perfect venue for a night of high quality and drama.

M. SMITH 3-2 JACK LEWIS: The first game of the evening proved to be one of the most thrilling. "Pot" had the Academical in high spirits with an excellent 22-dart opening leg, whittling his score down to 150 after 12 darts, but Smith responded with a 23 darter to level the scores. Double trouble in the third heightened the drama, but Lewis kept his nerve to hit double 16 and hold throw. Smith opened with a 140 in the fourth leg, but Lewis responded with two tons to find himself on 196 after four visits. With the fate of the match hanging in the balance, it took a double 1 from Smith to level the scores and set up a climactic decider. Unfortunately, the final leg failed to meet the standards of its predecessors, and a ton halfway through the leg was all it took for Smith to seal the only break of the game and edge a superb encounter.
RICHARD SWAINSTON 3-0 TOM WRIGHT: Luck was not on the Ginger Hero's side as the draw pitched him against Aces star player Swainston, who barely threw a loose dart throughout. A 50 checkout sealed a 21-dart first leg, and though Wright notched up a ton in the second, Swainston held firm to double his advantage. The Aces thrower sealed the third in 20 darts, a 60 checkout ending Wright's resistance.
TREVOR TYE 2-3 MATT ROYLE: Unarguably the tie of the night, Matt Royle marked his Academical debut with a remarkable comeback against Trevor Tye. The Aces man started on the front foot, breaking Royle's throw with a 68 checkout sealing a 21-dart leg. Better was to follow; two 140s gave Tye the chance to claim a 15 darter. Though the double 18 was missed, the second attempt landed in the red bit to round off an excellent leg. It was then that Royle sprung into action. Having troubled the treble plenty already, Royle hit a ton and a 99 as he looked to rescue the game. Tye could not close out the leg but his opponent could, nailing tops at the first attempt. Royle kept the pressure up in the fourth, reaching 152 after 15 to stay in contention, and when Tye missed double 18 for a 21-dart leg the Academical player was able to take out 59 in ice-cool fashion. The decider was a superb culmination to a high-intensity games, with the pair trading big scores. Tye followed up a 122 with a missed attempt on the bull for the match. It was Royle, who had put himself in an excellent position with a 140, who checked out 21 for a 24 darter to put the Academical on the board.
IAN SPEED 3-0 OLI NEWALL: Oli Newall's Franchise League development continued apace, but Ian Speed's consistency proved too much for the youngest player on the night. Speed hit two tons en route to a 26-dart leg in the first leg, repeating the feat in the second thanks to a 68 checkout. Speed left 99 after 21 darts in the third leg, but a two-dart 61 out made it three 26-dart legs in a row for a comfortable win.
D. BELFITT 0-3 MATT EARDLEY: Matt "Cardley" made it three Franchise League wins from three with an easy 3-0 win in the fifth tie of the night. Eardley opened with a 123, adding a ton before a cool 52 checkout rounded off a 21-dart leg. Eardley once again hit a 21 darter in the second, needing just one ton before finishing 61. The third leg lacked any of its predecessors' quality, with Eardley completing the whitewash in a mammoth 46 darts - the longest leg of the night by a full 16 darts.
D. WILLS 0-3 ED MCCOSH: With a draw up for grabs, Ed McCosh kept his cool to take a 3-0 win and an overall share of the spoils. The Academical captain was rarely troubled, and a ton followed by a 93 saw him canter clear in the opener, needing just one dart at double 18 to seal a 22-dart leg. McCosh opened the second leg with another ton, wobbling slightly before hitting 96 to leave 95 after 18 darts. Again, double 18 did the trick, and a 140 in the third leg had McCosh well on his way to victory. Wills would not give up however, hitting an 81 to leave 127. McCosh's nerve almost left him with the previously unmissable double 18 letting him down. Double 9 was dealt with swiftly though, and the win secured the draw for the Academical.
The result lifts the Academical firmly into mid-table, while the Aces kept themselves off the bottom of the table with their first draw of the season.

Aces 3-3 Academicals

Mick Smith 3-2 Jack Lewis
Rich Swainston 3-0 Tom Wright
Trev Tye 2-3 Matt Royle
Ian Speed 3-0 Oli Newell
D. Belfitt 0-3 Matt Eardley
Dawn Wills 0-3 Ed McCosh

We start Week 4 with the Academicals travelling to the Newbold Club with both teams still searching for their first wins in the Franchise League. The night couldn't have got off to a better start when Aces' Mick Smith played Academicals Jack Lewis in an exciting encounter where the pendulum swung back and forth where no player were giving an inch. Lewis started well holding throw in the first leg then it was status quo up until the 4th leg of the game with Academicals' Lewis 2-1 up Smith hammered in a 20 dart leg to level the scores and push the game into a decider where Smith continued to rally to a 3-2 victory and put the Aces into an early lead. The second game of the night saw Rich Swainston up against Tom Wright. Swainston started well hitting a 21 dart leg to take the lead and Wright never really got going as Swainston followed by throwing consistent darts finishing with a 20 darter to win 3-0. Up next was another close game between Trev Tye and Matt Royle, Tye kicked off in style with a 21 darter then followed it by hitting a 140 to start the second leg followed by a ton to set up a 16 dart leg to race into a 2-0 lead but just when you thought the game will be over early Matt Royle made a fantastic comeback and it looked like it took Tye by surprise with the scores level at 2-2 it was Royle who finished hitting the winning double to complete the comeback and pull one back for the Academicals. The fourth game of the night saw a ultra consistant performance by Aces' Ian Speed defeating Oli Newell by a 3-0 scoreline with every leg finishing in 26 darts. With the score at 3-1 to the home side Academicals would have been forgiven for lying down but that's not in their nature as a fight back ensured first Matt Eardley took out Belfitt starting with back to back 21 dart legs then finishing in style to guarantee theirs something to play for in the decider. The deciding match of the night saw Dawn Willis have a chance to give Aces the victory but Ed McCosh had other ideas has he cooly finished the night with a 3-0 victory and rescue his team a battling point.

Railwaymen 0-6 Black Eagles

Jordan Payne 2-3 Micky Stocks
Tom Gurran 0-3 Simon Birkett
Brian Lewis 2-3 Stephen Briggs
Mark Gurran 0-3 Greg Beard
Gav Pilling 2-3 Pete Daffin
Pete Bramley 2-3 Jelger Tuinstra

The Black Eagles travelled to The Station hoping to keep their 100% record in tact and what a belter of a match it turned out to be with close games aplenty and the scoreline didn't do the game justice. First up saw a quality battle between Railwaymen's Jordan Payne up against Micky Stocks in a match that went all the way with both men holding throw throughout the game. In the first leg Stocks took the lead hitting a 20 dart leg but Payne hit back immediately making the score 1–1. In the third leg Micky hit another 20 dart leg to go 2-1 in front but once again Payne rallied hitting an impressive 13 dart leg to equalise for a second time to force the match into a deciding leg which saw Stocks fire in a maximum and finishing it off in 21 darts to win the game 3-2 and put Black Eagles 1-0 in front. Second up was young Tom Gurran facing a difficult game against Simon Birkett as it proved as Birkett kicked off with a 21 dart leg. Gurran tried to reply with a maximum but it was all in vain as Birkett reeled off the next 2 legs hitting a 104 checkout and an 18 dart leg to win the game 3-0. Third up on the night was an evenly matched contest between Brian Lewis and Stephen Briggs where every leg went with the throw. Lewis managed to chuck in a maximum to try and fend off Briggs but as the game wore on it went to another decider where experience counted for Briggs as he hit a 15 darter and a 106 checkout to win the battle 3-2. In the fourth game of the night Mark Gurran tried to keep his team in the game but had a mountain to climb against "The Titan" Greg Beard and it showed as Greg kicked off hitting a 20 darter but their was more to come in the second where he hit an 18 dart leg and a maximum to go 2-0 in front and just when you thought Gurran had a chance "The Titan" slammed the door in his face winning the game 3-0 and put his team 4 up overall but we weren't finished yet. Up next was Railwaymen's Gav Pilling as he faced "Super Daffs" Pete Daffin and what a match it was. It had everything from a maximum a piece and high finishes aplenty. Pilling took the lead with an 18 dart leg, hitting the first maximum of the game. Daffin hit back with a maximum of his own, winning legs in 15 and 18 darts not to mention the ton checkout to take the lead 2-1, but back came Pilling taking out a 112 finish to level the scores again and force the game into a decider where Daffin showed true class winning the game with a 13 dart leg and a 134 finish to win the game 3-2. In the final match of the night saw yet another quality darts match between Railwaymen's Pete Bramley and Jelger Tuinstra, It all started well for Jelger taking the first 2 legs everyone thought he was going to win it comfortably but not Bramley who fired back in the game hitting a maximum and a 20 dart leg then in the fourth leg Bramley equalised to set up a decider in the final game of the night. Tuinstra held his nerve to win the game 3-2 with a 21 dart leg to give Black Eagles a 6-0 victory but with the scores so close Railwaymen were unlucky not to get anything out of the game.

Vulcans 3-3 All Stars

Russ Lockwood 3-0 Tony Harper
Chris Gray 1-3 Dave Copley
Anthony Warne 1-3 Terry Temple
Daz Layden 3-2 Daz Johnson
Jim Smith 0-3 Carl Wilkinson
Steve Stacey 3-2 Johnny Daniels

It was a closely fought contest at Frecheville where the All Stars looked to defend their 100% start to the season against a resolute Vulcans side in a very even game where it went all the way to the final leg of the night and also every leg in every game was around 22 darts and saw both teams go in the lead only to be pegged back. The night started when Frecheville's Russ Lockwood kicked off proceedings with a 21 darter against Tony Harper to go in front then Russ rallied through the match winning 3-0. In the next match saw Chris Gray up against All Stars Dave Copley in a match which saw 3 solid 17 dart legs between the pair, the game started well for Gray who hit the first 17 darter to go 1-0 in front but Copley found his range after that winning the next 2 legs both also in 17 to overturn the deficit and Dave finished off Gray in the fourth to win 3-1 and equalise for his team. The third game of the night saw Anthony Warne in a tough contest against Terry Temple. Game started off with Temple taking the lead with an 18 dart leg and an 88 checkout but back came Warne with a 20 darter of his own to level the scores, in the third leg Temple regained the lead calmly taking out the double then turned into over-drive hitting a maximum and winning the game in style finishing in 15 darts to win 3-1 and put his team 2-1 up. The fourth match saw 2 warriors battle it out in the battle of the Daz's. Vulcans Daz Layden faced All Stars PDC player Darren Johnson, Layden kicked off in fine form taking a 2-0 lead finishing in 19 and 16 darts but "Dynamite" hit back with a 17 and an 18 dart leg that also included 3 maximums and a 98 finish to boot to level the tie but Layden weren't to be denied in the final leg decider where he managed to race over the line to win a tightly fought contest 3-2 to equal the scores on the night with 2 to play. Jim Smith played Carl Wilkinson both knowing that a win for either men guaranteed their team won't taste defeat and Wilkinson got off to the perfect start with a 13 dart leg and he didn't hold back winning the second leg as Jim a Smith tried to scrape anything Wilkinson managed to run riot and win the match 3-0 and take the game into the decider knowing his team won't be beaten tonight. In the final game of the night with the game delicately poised at 3-2 to All Stars, Vulcans Steve Stacey was looking to rescue a draw against Johnny Daniels and Stacey got off to the perfect start taking the lead but Daniels hit back with an 18 dart leg to equalise then won the third to go in front but then it was Stacey's turn to fight back equalising with a 19 darter to take the game into a deciding last leg of the night it was a matter of who will hold their nerve for the team in a tussle which saw Stacey take out the winning double and both teams sharing the spoils in this thriller of a contest.

Steve Newton faced Brad Ellis in the closest contest of the night in the third game which saw Newton shoot out of the blocks and had a superb start after taking the first leg he followed it up with a 21 darter to go 2 in front with 3 to play then Ellis hit back finally finding his range to tie the game 2-2 and make the game go into a decider where Brad managed to complete the comeback and defeat Newton who played very well and deserved more than he got out of it. Jodie Bruce was next up for the Warriors as she faced a tough game against Ryan Goffin and it showed as Goffin kicked off with a maximum then that followed a 13 dart leg to open proceedings. In the second leg Goffin continued the form hitting a 17 darter to go 2-0 up and after that he raced to victory taking out the winning double to put his side 4-0 up with 3 to play. In match 2 Ben "Boom" Beardmore showed very good consistency against Panthers' John Leiber after taking the first leg, "Boom" then fired in an 18 darter to go 2 in front but after a mini fight back from Leiber, Beardmore finished off with another 18 dart leg and a high finish of 76 to win 3-1 and level the score on the night. Mick Wood was up next against Sausages' Matt Pryor and Pryor got out of the blocks well hitting an 18 darter in the first leg to ease any nerves and he didn't look back after that as he hit an 74 finish and took control of the match winning 3-0 and Mick Wood didn't have an answer to Pryor's form on the night. With the scores 2-1 to Sausages "The Landlord" Pete Bell toed the oche facing a tough game against Russ Simons as it proved with Simons claiming the first leg with an 18 darter but battling Bell weren't going to lie down as he took the next 2 legs to put himself in front, after an equalising 4th leg from Simons it was Bell who won the decider to put his team 3-1 up with 2 to play. In another cracker of a game that this league is producing Ryan Goffin faced Stephen Ewington and Ewington showed what he is capable of starting with a 21 dart leg, Goffin then hit back with a maximum and a 16 darter to level the scores but then Stephen fired home a solid 18 and a high finish of 90 to go back in front. Goffin weren't finished yet as he levelled the scores once again to make this tussle go into a decider, Ewington reeled off a 19 dart leg to win the game 3-2 in another barnstorming game. In the final match of the night Ben Dolman put the icing on the cake for the Sausages winning his first game of the league as he ran out a comfortable winner over Mick Hulley to give The Sausages a tasty 5-1 victory.

Vulcans 6-0 Wizards

Antony Warne 3-2 Lee Slack
Steve Stacey 3-0 Sarah Gregory
Daz Layden 3-0 Simon Simmons
Russ Lockwood 3-0 Mandy Slack
Chris Grey 3-0 Tony Cosil
Matthew Grey 3-1 Michael Slack

The night at Frecheville started with a tense first match between Antony Warne and Lee Slack with every dart going against the throw. Warne started off with a 17 darter and a max to take the first leg of the night but Slack responded and levelled the scores, Warne then hit another 180 and took a 2-1 lead as he tried to keep Slack at bay. Lee hit back with a maximum of his own and with the scores at 2-2, Warne held out and hit the decisive double to give his team the advantage early doors. In the second game the Vulcans showed what they're capable of as Steve Stacey fired a steady 17, then getting a maximum followed by a 14 dart leg has he took victory over Gregory. Daz Layden showed good form as he took off with a 180 then achieving 16 and 17 darters as he ran riot over Simmons to put his side 3 up. In the fourth game saw Russ Lockwood confidently despatch Mandy Slack with a max and finishing in 18 darts then followed that up by hitting a 21 dart leg to give the Vulcans a 4-0 lead with 2 to play. Chris Grey was next up for the Vulcans as he took on Tony Cosil trying to keep the teams winning run going and he did emphatically running out 3-0 winner. In the final match of the night saw Matthew Grey take on young Michael Slack and when Grey took the first leg it seemed a foregone conclusion but Slack equalised in the second leg throwing some good darts but Grey was no match as he took the last 2 and winning the game with a 21 dart finish to give the Vulcans a 6-0 victory.

Sausages edge university team in thriller

Cumberland Sausages 4-2 Academicals.
The Academicals slipped to a second successive 4-2 franchise league defeat in an entertaining game at the Cumberland pub in Beighton.
The game was poised until the end and with a bit more composure on the doubles (Thomas Wright) it may have been a different result
We arrived at the meet point in jovial mood and this was improved further upon hearing of John Henderson's pro tour drinking exploits - perhaps our own drinking levels aren't so bad after all.....
After an arduous journey involving a flat tyre and several wrong turns (sorry!) we arrived at the Cumberland; a nice country pub with a decent darts set up and most importantly a drink for only £2.60 (come on uni arms sort it out!)
MATCH 1 - Brad Clowery v Marc Ellis. The Pizza boy made his long awaited return to the oche in the first match of the evening against what appeared to be a giant (he was pretty good at darts thought to be fair). He opened up with a 21 dart leg but after that Clowery upped his game and for the most part matched his opponent's scoring. However it wasn't enough to stop Ellis winning 3-0.
MATCH 2 - Matthew Eardley v Matt Pryor. A star performer last week, Matt Cardley again produced some brilliant darts to level the tie. Pryor opened strongly with a 24 darter but a last dart D8 finish in the second leg made it 1-1. The turning point was late in the second leg when with his opponent around 200 points ahead Eardley hit a 140 followed by a an 83 finish on the bullseye to take the leg. He then followed this up with a D5 finish in the fourth leg to win the match. Preeeeeeeeemium Tungsten!
MATCH 3 - Danny Hall v Ben Beardmore. The reigning champions league winner was up next and was unfortunate to come up against a very consistent opponent in his first match back. Hall played some solid darts throughout but could not match Beardmore who's highlights included a 22 dart leg and a 66 finish.
So at the half time interval we were 2-1 down and still well in a game. After another pint and some superb curry we settled down for the second half of the tungsten feast.
MATCH 4 - Thomas Wright v Peter Bell. Next up was a quite excruciating game. Both started well on scoring but let themselves down on the doubles. Bell took a 2-0 lead before Wright managed to pull one back by hitting D8. The onlookers were then subjected to a marathon 4th leg which saw Bell wrap up victory on D1 with a 73 dart leg!!!!
MATCH 5 - Adam Warner v Shaun Greenfield. So once again we went into the 5th game needing to win in order to keep the game alive. The first leg was a sloppy affair by myself saved by a two dart 62 finish. Greenfield then hit back in the second leg hitting a 180 and levelling the game. The game then turned again when i set off in the 3rd with two 140s before finishing in 18 darts (watch out John Walton). Greenfield edged the fourth leg but could not find a double allowing me to finish off for a 3-1 victory.
MATCH 6 - Ed McCosh v Steve Ewington. A win in this game would've seen us take a creditable point but unfortunately it was not to be. Ewington won the first leg with a 63 CO but McCosh managed to hit back with a D10 finish. The turning point was in the 3rd leg when with the leg evenly poised, Ewington hit a fantastic 160 CO, the highest of the league season. He then comfortably won the 4th leg to keep up the sausages' 100% league record.
So overall it was an improvement on last week with 4 of our players registering leg wins and an overall improvement in the standard of our play. Of course it has to be remembered that we are all still learning and have a lot more learning to do. Bring on next week at the fortress!!

In the final match of the night Steve Marfleet and Matt Pryor went toe to toe with Marfleet taking a 2-0 leg lead and a 20 dart leg in doing so, Pryor threatened a comeback taking the 3rd leg but Marfleet weren't to be denied and finished with a 20 dart leg to win 3-1 but it was The Cumberland's night winning 4 games to 2.

Station started their Franchise League season in fine form taking out Wilton Wizards without dropping a single game. Up first was Jordan Payne who kicked off with a maximum in the very first leg of the night and followed it with a 20 darter. Gregory just didn't have an answer and went down 3-0. Next up Tom Gurran who was finding the treble 20 bed with ease and hitting big scores  mustering up a 21 darter in his whitewash over Michael Slack? to put Station 2 up and in total command of the tie. Pete Bramley stepped up next for the home side against the other Slack.
Bramley got the first leg under his belt them hit a 21 dart leg to take a 2-0 leg and in the third wrapped up the winning double for yet another 3-0. Mark Gurran was up next against Cosil and he also hit the ground running without dropping a leg in his victory. Gav Pilling showed a bit of form on his own taking out a straight 80 finish then hitting a 21 dart leg as he cruised past Lee Slack. The final match of the night their was no pressure on Moreman as he faced Darren Bleur and it showed as he also finished with a 3-0 victory to give his Station team a 6-0 victory.

Woodbourne Wolves 0-6 Frecheville Vulcans

Gareth Baxter 0-3 Russ Lockwood (21, 17, 14)
Ricardo Cruz 0-3 Matthew Cray (20, W, W)

At the Woodbourne Hotel the home team faced a rampant Frecheville Vulcans side who was in fine form on the opening night the first game saw Woodbourne's Gareth "The Bear?" Baxter against Russ Lockwood. Lockwood managed to start with a 21 dart leg but that was just the beginning he followed it up with a 17 then won the game with a 14 darter leaving Baxter stranded 3-0. Next up was Ricardo Cruz against Matthew Cray and Cray kicked off with a 20 dart leg to take the lead and their was no looking back as he never dropped a leg in his 3-0 victory. The third game of the night Steve Naisbitt looking to pull one back for his team faced Daz Layden who was in fine form starting with a 21 dart leg then followed with a 15 and 16 plus a 121 finish to boot to fire his team 3-0 up at the halfway stage. With Frecheville already 3-0 up at the halfway stage it was up to Pat Finney to try and keep The Wolves in the game but he couldn't muster up a leg against an on song Chris Grey who started with a 16 dart leg and he kept up the form all the way through the game hitting a 21 in the 2nd leg and finishing the game with a 15 darter to win and put his Vulcans team in command of the tie. In the fifth game Wolves's John Smethurst played Steve Stacey and Stacey continued the rout as he hit a 19 dart leg in the second game and in the 3rd leg wrapped up the win with ease. In the final match of the night saw Antonio Cruz squaring up to Anthony Warne and after Cruz finally winning the first leg of the league season for the Wolves it was Warne who took out a 16 and 17 dart leg to win the game 3-1 and the Vulcans ran out comfortable 6-0 winners.

Academicals host the Panthers in close call

Academicals 2 -4 Woodbourne Panthers.
The Academicals were unlucky not to take at least a draw from an exciting opening match in the Sheffield Franchise League.
Upon arrival all seemed well - the beers were cold, a new board was on the way and no one smelt noticeably bad (an improvement on our last home game)
...
Once our opponents arrived we found out that our lights, oche, room, pub and lives in general were not up to scratch - small issues were expected to arise as we are still learning about darts of such a high calibre (the odd sub 25 dart leg)
MATCH 1 - Thomas Wright v John Leiber. It was down to the man famous for being the only Ipswich fan north of Derby to play the Academicals first ever franchise league match. He started well, regularly hitting the treble 20 and forcing his opponent to play well. However, Leiber was too consistent on his scoring and when presented with 3 darts at a double, finished every time to win the match 3-0.
MATCH 2 - Matthew Eardley v Mick Wood. Match 2 saw the Academicals first win of the season. Matt Cardley outscored his opponent throughout playing some lovely darts (the highlight being a second leg 19 darter, leaving 176 after 9). Wood came back into the game but he kept his cool to hit double top for a comfortable 3-1 victory.
MATCH 3 - George Francis v Brad Ellis. I was down at the bar for the first leg of this but I am reliably informed that our man started the game well. Ellis was the Panthers best player on the night and in the end his scoring power was just too much and he ran away for a 3-0 win. Congratulations to George for winning the more important and prestigious 9 dart, high score double elimination challenge though!
MATCH 4 - Oliver Newall v Russ Symons. The second half got underway with another 3-0 win for the Panthers. Neither player really got going in this one but Symons was more consistent and hit his doubles when it mattered to win. Both are capable of much more.
MATCH 5 - Adam Warner v John Shulz. At 3-1 down a win was imperative for the Academicals to maintain their slim hopes of nicking a draw. I played some solid darts in legs 1 and 3 and got away with some shit ones in leg 2 but a win is a win
MATCH 6 - Ed McCosh v Ryan Goffin. A win in this last game would have seen us nick a creditable draw but unfortunately it was not to be. The skipper started well hitting some solid scores before missing D16 for a 128 checkout - exciting stuff. Goffin (any relation to David?) was a good player and despite being over a thousand points at more than one stage was able to win 3-1 (just a bit a banter).
Overall it was a good night and thanks to the Woodbourne Panthers for coming down. Good luck next week and we look forward to the return fixture. We still need to iron a few things out but it was a positive start and one to be proud of - we're still learning but we'll get there.
